Small-Sided Game with End Zones
This small-sided game with end zones helps adult amateur teams improve possession, support play, and transitions in a competitive format. It gives players a clear target while forcing them to stay connected, move well, and use the ball with purpose.
Setup
This drill is played with 2 teams of 3 to 5 players each. Each team defends 2 goals and attacks the opposition’s 2 goals.
You do not need a full pitch for this exercise. Set it up in any space that gives both teams enough room to combine, defend, and break into the end zones.
Place 4 mini goals as shown in the diagram area. Mark the field and the end zones with cones, then create a small no-entry arc in front of each goal to stop defenders standing directly in front of goal.

Rules & Instructions
This game encourages controlled possession and sharp attacking decisions while keeping both teams switched on defensively. The aim is to move the ball well, stay organised, and attack the right space at the right moment.

Start Play:
- A team starts from behind the goal they are defending.
- Teams play 3 to 5 players each.
- Each team defends 2 goals.
- Each team attacks the opposition’s 2 goals.

Possession Team:
- Players can score in either of the 2 opposition goals.
- Players can only score while in the end zone.
- Everyone in the team must touch the ball before scoring.
- Players are limited to 3 touches.
- Use accurate passing and good positioning to keep possession.

Pressing Team:
- Defend both goals.
- Defenders are not allowed inside the small zones in front of the goals.

Restart:
- After a goal, play restarts from behind the defending goal.
- If a team throws the ball out, the opposite team gains possession.
- The opposite team must restart from behind their own goal.
Coaching Tips
- Keep the team compact so players always have short options.
- Encourage players to open their body early to see both goals and the next pass.
- Remind players to move early into support instead of waiting for the ball.
- Coach defenders to communicate and protect both goals without overcommitting.
- Emphasise calm finishing once the end zone is reached.
- Demand quick reactions in transition to secure possession or recover shape.
